Description

The first Digger to be wounded after the initial build up of Australian forces to Vietnam in 1965 was given a little chance of recovery and even less chance of remaining in the Army. However today, the soldier, Corporal Douglas Hardman of Zillmere, Qld, is not only still active in the Army, but he is back in Vietnam again, having completed his second tour of duty and the first few months of a six month's extension. Although he had months of continual operations for his wounds after his return home from 1 RAR, spending most of the time on his back, Cpl Hardman eventually made a complete recovery. And being a single man, he then applied for a second posting to Vietnam. His police duties, which mainly concern patrolling, keep him busy. After a check of roads through the Nui Dat base, one of his tasks is escorting the daily convoy of trucks about half way to the Australian Logistics headquarters at Vung Tau...20 miles away. The convoy briefing over, the vehicles leave the Task Force main gate and head off in formation through rural Phuoc Tuy, passing through the Province capital of Baria. The scene then changes to the river flats, as the Diggers pass through fishing villages. A second Provost escort from Vung Tau meets the convoy and Corporal Hardman and his team report their mission successful and return to check the orderly movement of vehicles around Nui Dat and other police duties.
