Smokers pipe : Private Thomas Henry John Hollis, 3 Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment
Description
Smoker's pipe with octagonal brown wooden bowl and a black wooden stem joined by an aluminium band. Four of the sides of the bowl are carved 'KOREA', 'POW', 'T.H.', and 'DB'. The base of the bowl is carved '2/400311'.
History / Summary
Pipe used by 2/400311 Private Thomas Henry John Hollis, of 3RAR, while he was a prisoner of war of the North Koreans and the Chinese during the Korean War. It was made for him by a fellow prisoner. Hollis served in the Second World War with 2/11 Australian Cavalry Commando Squadron and 66 Battalion, with the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces in Japan, and with 3RAR in Korea. He was captured in January 1951 and released on 9 August 1953.
