Description

Vietnam. 1968. An oscilloscope, part of the GEODAR device designed by the Australian Field Operations Research Section (FORS) to detect tunnels and to give an indication of their size, depth and contents. The GEODAR was a radar device which sent out a short pulse every millisecond and received reflection from underground objects of air interfaces, in the same manner as a conventional radar sees objects in air. The oscilloscope read-out showed the returned wave form and a chart recording was made to show the characteristic signatures of targets. The GEODAR had an operating speed of between one and two miles per hour.
