Description
Probably Germany. c.1915. Portrait of Hauptmann Oswald Boelcke (left) and Reserve-Lieutenant Max Immelmann, German fighter pilots. Boelcke (1891-1916), universally acknowledged as the first true fighter pilot, was also a gifted instructor whose pupils included Max Immelmann (d.1916). Together with other pilots they created the famous `Fokker scourge' of the Western Front from 1915 to 1917. (Original modern print housed in AWM Archive Store)
