Description
Melbourne, Vic. c. 1902. Studio portrait of Private Alfred Lewington, born 4 August 1872 in Yarrawonga, Vic, died 4 November 1957 in Narrandera, NSW. During the Boer War Lewington joined the Cape Colony Cyclist Corps, an irregular unit raised in South Africa. He is wearing standard khaki drill summer uniform of the British and Australian forces. The plume in his hat is an ostrich feather, and the sword is just a prop. He was presented with a watch fob by officers of the Corps 'for his invaluable scouting and shooting'. The fob is in the collection of the Australian War Memorial. (Donor L Clifford)
