Description
The crew of a Department of Aircraft Production (DAP) Beaufort bomber A9-557 in and beside a Jeep on the port side of their aircraft. Left to right: 422085 Flying Officer (FO, later Flight Lieutenant [Flt Lt]) John William Shipman, 415636 Flt Lt Harry John Fowler (Pilot and crew captain), 422062 FO (later Flt Lt) Francis Owen Smith, and 406817 FO Arthur Geoffrey Waite. All are members of No 100 Squadron RAAF. The crew flew this aircraft (now in the Australian Memorials collection) on 34 missions, including its final flight on 20 January 1945. All were killed on 13 March 1945 when a defective bomb fuse caused a premature explosion during a bomb run in their aircraft which was then Beaufort bomber A9-650. Donor: D. Fowler.
