Description
Brian Bourke, 1st Australian Armoured Regiment, sitting in a captured Type 94 Japanese tankette, serial number 88, on the beach. The tankette was captured on 1 July 1945 by 2/9 Battalion, 18th Infantry Brigade, who handed it over to the 1st Armoured Regiment to keep it running. The tankette was the first of its kind to be found in the South West Pacific area by Australian troops. In the background is a wrecked Catalina aircraft of No. 42 Squadron. The tankette is now held in the collection of the Australian War Memorial, accession number REL/16287.
