Studio portrait of 250748 Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) William Ellis Newton VC. Flt Lt Newton was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his extraordinary courage during ten months of operational flying in Boston bomber aircraft with No. 22 Squadron RAAF. He was particularly cited for his actions on 16 March 1943 involving repeated raids on Salamaua, New Guinea. During these raids, Flt Lt Newton was shot down over the Salamaua Isthmus on 18 March 1943, and was later executed (beheaded) by the Japanese at Salamaua on 29 March 1943.
