Description

Melbourne, Vic. 1942-12. Studio wedding portrait of the bridal party at the marriage of Joyce Cleaves (nee Davern) to Joseph Cleaves. The wedding took place at the Independent church on the corner of Collins Street and Russell Street. Left to right: standing: Bill Cleaves, best man, Joseph Cleaves, groom, Joyce Cleaves (nee Davern), bride, and Roy Mason, who gave the bride away. Sitting: Gwen Davern (later Webster), bridesmaid, the bride's sister. Joseph and Joyce Cleaves met through their involvement with Legacy. Joseph became a Legacy boy about 1923 and Joyce was one of the earliest Legacy girls when she joined in 1930. Despite being ration coupon time the bride was determined to marry in a nice bridal gown so she made her wedding dress and the bridesmaid's dress from a French crepe material, paid off on layby over two and a half years. No wedding reception was held. The bride's dress was later worn by three other brides, including Joyce Cleaves' sister, Gwen Davern (later Webster). The two sisters exchanged dresses for the wedding of Gwen Davern (see P02144.002) (Donor J. Cleaves)
