Description
Extensive collection of letters to his mother and fiance (later wife), and some letters from them to Pirie. Describes Independent Company and Commando training, active service during 1942-1943 in the Wau-Markham area, and the invasion of Balikpapan. Comments on the camaraderie of the unit, their isolation and poor supply lines in New Guinea, patrols, snipers, Japanese surrender in Borneo, attitude to officers and Americans. Also provides an insight into a young man and woman's love during a time of war.
