Description
Bapaume, France. 1916-10-16. Aerial photograph of part of the Amiens to Bapaume road and surrounding area. In the right foreground is Butte-de-Warlencourt, a large mound of chalk said to have been built so that Napoleon could watch a battle in the vicinity. There was once a monastery there and a convent in Warlencourt (centre left in photograph) and the chalk came from a tunnel 100 feet between the two. Members of No. 2 Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers, lived in the tunnel for some time. (Original housed in AWM Archive Store)
