Description
Melbourne, Vic. 1944-09-01. A group of servicemen and officers of the "Argus" newspaper inspecting silk maps produced by the Argus newspaper in co-operation with the RAAF. Rolls of silk scarf material are fed through a rotary printing press at the Argus newspaper building to produce silk maps of areas where Australian aircrews are operating against Japanese forces in the South West Pacific Area. The maps are part of the survival gear issued to aircrews in case they are forced down in enemy territory and have to make their own way back to base. This production process for the maps is the first time that silk has ever been fed through a rotary printing press.
