Collection includes service records, transcripts of oral history tape recorded in 1983, prisoner of war diary and lettercards, telegrams and correspondence between Sergeant Heckendorf, his family and other people. They cover movements and patrols of 2/30 Battalion in Malaya (including the battle at Gemas), description of terrain, Salvation Army amenities, movements and conditions on the forced march from Bampong to Moulmien to work on the Burma-Thailand Railway (also mentioning cholera and deaths of friends), Red Cross supplies received at Changi, news of home, messages of hope and congragulations on returning home after the cessation of hostilities. Includes correspondence and papers regarding enlistment and death of Pilot Officer John Heckendorf, who is frequently referred to in letters to his brother Erwin.
