Description

This group of nurses are the party of twenty Australian Red Cross nurses, sponsored by the NSW Jockey Club, and know as the 'Bluebirds' because of their blue uniforms. Identified left to right, back row: Miss Moore, a masseuse; Mrs McKillop; Miss Harris; Miss Jamieson; Miss Hungerford; Miss Robinson. Third row: Miss Hutchinson; Miss Sheridan; Mrs Cook (partially obscured); Miss Wallace; Miss Lynette Crozier; Miss Minnie Hough; Miss Hilda Loxton. Second row: Miss Hughes; Miss S Fraser Thompson (later Mrs Hill); Miss Gray; Miss Dorothy Ellena Duffy; Miss Moreton. Front row: Sister Nellie Weston Crommelin; Mlle Niau (who accompanied the nurses to teach them French); Sister Norman. Sister Crommelin had previously served as a Red Cross nurse in England and France but had returned to Australia in late 1915.
