Ex-POW Nurses on Holiday
Description
Portrait of ex-POW nurses Captain Kay Isabel Alice "Tootie" Parker (left) and Lieutenant Mavis Cullen, both AANS, leaving Adelaide for Perth after a few days' holiday. They were among six nursing sisters captured by the Japanese at Rabaul in January 1942 and later that year shipped to Japan. Parker was awarded the Associate Royal Red Cross (ARRC) for devotion to duty at Rabaul in 1942, her citation making no mention of her leadership and inspiration during her subsequent captivity at Yokohama Yacht Club, and Totsuka Prisoner of War (POW) camps.
