Description
Tel el Kebir, North Egypt. c. 1916-01. Informal portrait of Chaplain Major William McKenzie, of the Salvation Army, padre of 4th Battalion, in the tent lines. The original caption notes that his duties on Gallipoli included preaching about three times on Sunday to a congregation of between six to twelve soldiers, often with shells flying overhead; writing letters for soldiers; supplying the men with note paper, cigarettes, chocolate and anything he could procure; acting as general secretary and worker in the officers' mess.
