1. Winter, Robert 2. Kinsmore, John William
Description
The diary originally belonged to Robert Winter, of the German Army, and was subsequently lost and retrieved by Driver John William (known as Jack) Kinsmore, of 50th Field Artillery (13th Field Artillery Brigade). The short and irregular daily entries, in German in a number of different hands, cover the period August 1914 - June 1916 and are accompanied by a number of nominal lists and battle sketches. Kinsmore's entries covering January 1918 - January 1919, possibly made after the event, focus on operations in the Amiens area over July-November 1918, and his part in them, with references to action at Villers-Bretonneux, Peronne, Mont St Quentin, Bellicourt, Joncourt, etc. A note on the inside cover states that the diary was found in the village of La Motte on 8 August. The item includes a two page document in English, containing a poem and some personal details, probably of Winter and translated from German.
