Informal outdoor portrait of three officers of the 3rd Australian Training Battalion based at Perham Downs on Salisbury Plain, United Kingdom. Identified are: Lieutenant (Lt) Eric John Carl Stopp, Adjutant, (on the left) a 20 year old clerk from Kent Town South Australia who embarked as a 2nd Lieutenant aboard HMAT Ascanius from Adelaide on 20 October 1914. Lt Stopp was diagnosed with neurasthenia and invalided home in April 1918. Major John Newman, DSO, Commanding Officer (in the centre), a 34 year old agent from Kalgoorlie, Western Australia when he sailed aboard HMAT Ascanius from Fremantle on 2 November 1914. Major Newman was wounded in action on 25 July 1916 and was posted for duty with the 3rd Australian Training Battalion on 19 November 1916. He was mentioned in General Haig's Despatches in May 1918 and awarded the DSO on 4 June 1918. He returned to Australia on 24 September 1918. Both these officers served at Gallipoli before going to the Western Front. The third officer (on the right) is the Quartermaster who has not been identified.
