Collection relating to the Second World War service of 16069 Stoker Eric Charles Evans, HMAS Sydney (II), Royal Australian Navy, Mediterranean, 1940.

Wallet 1 of 2 – Consists of one diary of Stoker Evans, with entries dated between 21 June and 14 November 1940, written on the HMAS Sydney (II). The diary focusses on significant events in detail, including the bombardment of Bardia, the sinking of the Italian destroyer Espero, the sinking of the Italian cruiser Bartolomeo Colleoni during the Battle of Cape Spada, the bombardments of several Greek islands, and the sinking of enemy ships in the Adriatic Sea.

Wallet 2 of 2 – Consists of two folders of material relating to Stoker Evans’ service on the HMAS Sydney (II). Folder 1 contains one HMAS Sydney (II) Christmas Day menu, dated 1940, and one copy of naval messages exchanged upon the HMAS Sydney (II)’s departure from the Mediterranean on 9 January 1941. Folder 2 contains five folders of photographs, arranged according to subject. They depict events relating to the HMAS Sydney and other ships in the British Mediterranean Fleet, including the sinking of the Italian destroyer Artigliere by HMS York, a presentation of the first Italian bomber forced down on Egyptian territory, the bombing of Italian ships in the Adriatic, and the Battle of Cape Spada.
