Description

Portrait of NX58617 Private (Pte) Nelson A. E. Short, 2/18 Battalion, of Woollahra, NSW. He was taken prisoner of war in Malaya and subsequently imprisoned in Sandakan, North Borneo. He was one of only six survivors from 1100 prisoners forced to undertake the infamous death marches from Sandakan to Ranau which began on 28 January 1945. Pte Short escaped from Ranau with NX19750 Lance Bombardier William D. Moxham of Toongabbie, NSW; NX42191 Pte Keith Botterill of Katoomba, NSW and QX6866 Pte F. D. Anderson, who died on 29 July 1945, in the jungle.
