Studio portrait of 337 Sergeant (Sgt) Hugh Barr, 44th Battalion. A native of Larne, Ireland, Sgt Barr was a seaman prior to enlisting in Perth on 18 January 1916. He embarked as a Private on HMAT Suevic at Fremantle on 16 June 1916 for England before moving to France with his unit in November 1916. Pte Barr rose rapidly through the ranks being promoted Corporal on 17 July 1917, Lance Sergeant on 11 September 1917 and Sergeant on 7 October 1917. Sgt Barr was killed in action in Belgium on 13 October 1917 and has no known grave He is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. Sgt Barr was posthumously awarded the Military Medal on 28 January 1918. (Donor Mrs M. Barr)
