White painted cardboard box. '185458 L/CPL / S. McALINEY / 2 APR 93 / BAIDOA. SOMALIA' is written on top of the lid in black ink. Green printed postal sticker and handwritten postal details are on the front side.
Associated with 185458 Lance Corporal Shannon McAliney. He was accidentally killed in Somalia on 2 April 1993, whilst on patrol with D Company, 1 Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR), on Operation Solace. Operation Solace was the Australian Defence Force's main contribution to humanitarian efforts in Somalia in 1992. The operation centred around the deployment of 1RAR Battalion Group to Humanitarian Relief Sector Baidoa in the Southern Central region of Somalia. The box was used to return McAliney's pack to Australia after his death.
