Description

Three diaries of Captain Berhardt Hermann Walther (Machine Gun Section, 11th Battalion). They describe Walther's service from his departure from Australia in October 1914 until his death from wounds in July 1916. Following training in Egypt, Walther landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and the second diary (March 1915-December 1915) decribes in detail his experiences of trench and battle action until his evacuation the following November. Following a short period in Palestine (at Tel-el-Kebir, Serapaum), he was posted to France from April 1916, moving into the front line with the 3rd Brigade in the Doullens/Albert area north of Amiens. Walther died as a result of wounds suffered in the battle of Pozieres on 25 July, six days after the diary's last entry.
