Description

Officer's full dress scarlet superfine doublet with yellow facings, and white piping around top of collar, down front opening and around Inverness flaps. Collar is edged with gold lace and Russia braid and has separately applied gold embroidered thistle collar badges. Gold braid shoulder straps have embroidered pips for lieutenant. Cuffs are edged with gold lace and have three gold Russia braid 'buttonholes', each terminating in a button. Inverness flaps have the same pattern of braid and buttons. Concealed pockets inside right front and two front flaps. Body of doublet is lined with cream cotton, flaps with white cloth. Doublet is complete with gilt buttons bearing 'SAMF SCo' (South Australian Military Forces Scottish Company) above a thistle. There are no manufacturer's marks on the reverse of buttons.

History / Summary

Worn by James Black Stevenson, born London, educated in Scotland. Worked in India for the Assam Tea Company c1876-1890. Also served with Mounted Rifles, Indian Army. Married Caroline Blakspeare in 1883. Migrated to South Australia in 1890 for sake of wife's health. Served c1900-1902 with the South Australian Scottish Company of the Adelaide Rifles. He was one of the three founding members of the Scottish Company and was involved in the uniform and button design, suggesting the adoption of a Black Watch tartan for the kilt. Died 1934. Survived by three daughters. Only son, Sgt James Archibald Brakspear Stevenson died of wounds sustained at Gallipoli.
