Description

Khaki drab field service cap with dark green crown, gold Russia braid edging, gilt British General Service buttons (Queen Victoria crown) and badge for 2 Battalion, South Australian Infantry. Gilt badge has crossed Australian and Union flags with superimposed shield flanked by a kangaroo and lion. Shield bears five stars and a diagonal band with '2ND. BTN. S.A.I.'. Beneath the shield are crossed swords with a heart at the intersection, and the motto 'SEMPER PARATUS' Cap is lined with khaki drab cotton, with a velvet band. Red embroidered name tape inside 'J.B.S.'.

History / Summary

Worn by James Black-Stevenson who was born in London, and educated in Scotland. He worked in India for Assam Tea Company c 1876-1890. Also served there with 'Mounted Rifles', Indian Army. Married Caroline Blakspeare in 1883. Migrated to South Australia in 1890 for sake of wife's health. Served c 1900-1902 with South Australian Scottish Company and Adelaide Rifles. Died in 1934. Survived by 3 daughters. The only son of marriage killed in the First World War.
