Operation Eastbound (RAAF Record No.11)
Newsreel produced by the Directorate of Public Relations RAAF. Covers the around the world flight eastward by a contingent three Canberra bombers of No. 82 Wing RAAF and a Hercules of No. 36 Squadron RAAF. This was the longest flight by RAAF aircraft flying around the world in 24 days and included 17 landings. The occasion for the flight was as part of the Australian representation to the celebrations for Nigeria's Independence on 1 October 1960. Shows various scenes of the aircraft and aircrew of the contingent, in flight scenes and landings and sight-seeing and official activities by the aircrew on the stop overs. Landings on the forward leg were at Nandi, Fiji, Canton Island, Hickham AFB Hawaii, Travers AFB California, Scott AFB, Charleston AFB South Carolina, Bermuda, Azores, RAF Luqa Malta, Lagos Nigeria. Shows the celebrations held at Lagos racecourse and HRH Princess Alexandria who represented the Queen. On the return leg the landings were at Aden, Maldives, Cocos Islands, RAAF Pearce WA and RAAF Amberley Qld where the contingent was met by family and friends.
