Description

Air Chief Marshal (ACM) Sir Wallace Kyle GCB CBE DSO DFC ADC (RAF) (left) shakes hands with O44310 Flying Officer (FO) Michael Patrick John Herbert RAAF. ACM Kyle, the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of RAF Bomber Command, was born in Australia and served with the RAAF on exchange at Point Cook in the 1930s. He was invited to be the reviewing officer of the 17 Course graduation parade at the RAAF Academy. Michael Herbert, a graduating Senior Air Cadet, served as Squadron Warrant Officer for this parade. FO Herbert, and O119223 Pilot Officer (PO) Robert Charles Carver, his navigator, were the crew of a Canberra aircraft, number A84-231, of 2 Squadron RAAF, which was lost on operations over Vietnam on 3 November 1970. Both men were posted as missing in action and were later presumed dead.
