Studio portrait of 1723 Private (Pte) Frederick Washington George Bessell, 51st Battalion. A stockman from Carnarvon, Western Australia, prior to enlistment in the 11th Battalion he embarked from Fremantle on 19 April 1915 for the Dardanelles. His unit was withdrawn to Alexandria, Egypt, and on 1 March 1916 he was transferred to the 51st Battalion. His new battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, in June 1916. Pte Bessell was killed in action near Mouquet Farm between 14 and 16 August 1916 He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 26 years.
