Description

Portrait of Private Tim W Tovell, Henri 'Digger' Heremene and an unidentified person on the deck of transport ship Kaisar-I-Hind en route to Australia. 'Digger' was a French orphan boy who had been appointed mascot of No 4 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps, when it was stationed at Cologne, Germany. The boy had been smuggled into England and then onto this ship. Private Tim W Tovell was an air mechanic with the Squadron, and the boy's self appointed guardian who later adopted him. The transport was carrying Australian service personnel home to Australia. There is evidence of Henri signing his name as Honore, indicating it maybe his real name.
