Description
Near Fromelles, France. 11 November 1918. View of a point near Fromelles where the 5th Division suffered severe losses in the battle of 19 July 1916. The ditch shown was fed with water from the River des Layes, flowing through the low lying areas, which at that time was a portion of no man's land. Some of the old wire still remains. One of the factors contributing to the heavy casualties sustained in this battle was the flooding of the area by the Germans after the Australians had reached their objective.
