Description

Unicomb speaks of his shooting at Captain Baron Manfred von Richthofen (The Red Baron), near Corbie, France, 21 April 1918; aerial combat; the supply of rations and water to troops; some of the weapons and equipment being used at the time; the difficulty in finding one's way about in areas near the Front; his description of an artillery barrage; German prisoners of war; his experience of the battles at Hamel and Peronne; being wounded in the head and evacuated to England; repatriation, by ship, during which deaths from disease (meningitis and influenza) resulted in burials at sea; his arrival in Sydney and being quarantined; the post-First World War influenza epidemic.
