Description
Studio portrait of Sergeant (Sgt) John Hamilton VC, 3rd Battalion. Sgt Hamilton was awarded the Victoria Cross as a private (Pte) for "most conspicuous bravery on 9th August, 1915, in the Gallipoli Peninsula". Pte Hamilton exposed himself to heavy fire in order to secure a better fire position for himself against the enemy bombing, thus encouraging the defence and driving away the enemy. He ceased duty with the AIF on 12 September 1919 and returned to Sydney where he died on 27 February 1961. (Donor R. Arman)
