Description

Napier, New Zealand. c 1919. Studio portrait of Captain (Capt) Percy Valentine Storkey VC, 19th Battalion. Capt Storkey was awarded the Victoria Cross as a Lieutenant (Lt) for "most conspicuous bravery, leadership, and devotion to duty when in charge of a platoon attack" on 7 April 1918 at Bois de Hangard, France. Lt Storkey and his platoon attacked the flank and rear of the enemy party, allowing another platoon to attack from the front. The platoon, under the leadership of Lt Storkey drove the enemy out, killing many and capturing three officers and fifty men, as well as one machine gun. He returned to Australia and was discharged on 31 January 1919. The photograph is inscribed "with compliments and respects of Percy V. Storkey Capt 19th Bn AIF"
