Description

Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Albert Chalmers Borella VC MM, 26 Battalion. Lt Borella was awarded the Victoria Cross for "most conspicuous bravery in attack" on 17 - 18 July 1918 at Villers Bretonneux. He ran ahead of his men under heavy enemy fire and captured an enemy machine gun. He then led his party with two Lewis guns, capturing a strongly held enemy trench. In March 1917, he was awarded the Military Medal for "conspicuous bravery in action during the attack on Malt Trench, north of Warlencourt". He returned to Australia in November 1918, and was discharged on 23 February 1919. Note he has four stripes on his sleeve indicating four years service.
