Description
An Airco DH 5 Scout plane (serial A 9197) of 68 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps (renumbered as 2 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps from 19 January 1918) on an airfield, possibly Harlaxton aerodrome. This particular aircraft was one of 200 built by the Aircraft Manufacturing Company, Ltd. Hendon. Generally disliked by pilots for its lack of performance, vibration, poor rearward visibility and a tendency to shed engine valves in a catastrophic manner, the DH5 was being replaced by the SE5a by the end of 1917. The pilot is possibly Lieutenant Sydney Winton Ayers.
