Description

Mounted studio portrait of 21 Private (Pte) James Llewellyn Lewis, 10th Battalion. A bank clerk from Port Adelaide, South Australia, Pte Lewis enlisted on 19 August 1914 and embarked with the 10th Battalion, E Company, aboard HMAT Ascanius (A11) in October. The 10th Battalion formed part of the 3rd Brigade, which was the covering force for the landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. Following the landing, Pte Lewis was initially reported as missing but was later confirmed as having been killed in action on 25 April 1915. No further particulars regarding his death are known, and his body was never recovered. Pte Lewis is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial which records the names of 4,900 Australian and New Zealand servicemen who died on or near the Gallipoli peninsula but whose graves are not known.
