Description

A studio portrait of Claude Ward, wearing a cadet uniform (left), and his elder brother Joseph. Claude Ward enlisted as a reinforcement for the 30th Battalion on 6 September 1915. He joined the battalion in Egypt and was transferred with the battalion to France in 1916. 2182 Private Claude Ward was killed in action on 20 July 1916 during the Battle of Fromelles. This account of his death was provided to Miss R. Coulsen of Auburn by the Australian Red Cross: "He was in C. Company and called 'Claude'. He was a Drover in New South Wales. He was killed during the Fromelles stunt on July 19th-22nd and was brought in from No Man's Land two days after, and buried just behind the lines at Fromelles. I did not see him hit or his grave, but it was generally known in the Battalion and full particulars can be had from Private S. J. Robertson, 3rd Reinforcements, 30th Battalion, France. Reference:- 1972 A. B. Curtis, 30th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, Dartford, 27.4.17. Note:- Written Private Robertson 5.5.17". Private Claude Ward has no known grave, his original grave was probably destroyed during the German 1918 spring offensive. His name is listed on the Memorial in the VC Corner Australian Cemetery in France. (Donor G. & L. Taylor)
