Description
Studio portrait of Captain William Charles Scurry MC DCM. He enlisted on 19 July 1915 in the 8th Reinforcements, 7th Battalion. He is best known for his invention of the 'drip' rifle, a delayed action device for firing a rifle by means of weights operated through water escaping from one tin into another. This device assisted the Australian evacuation of the Gallipoli Peninsula, giving the impression of soldiers still firing their rifles. Lance Corporal Scurry was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his work on Gallipoli. He later served with the 58th Battalion and was commanding officer of the 15th Light Trench Mortar Battery at the time he won his Military Cross in October 1916.
