Pidcock, John William MC (Lieutenant, b.1893 - d.1918)
Description
Collection relating to 196 Private John William Pidcock, 1 Field Ambulance (later Lieutenant JW Pidcock MC, 42 Battery, Australian Field Artillery).
Collection comprises an original handwritten diary (plus a typed transcript) kept by Pte Pidcock covering the period September 1914 - January 1916. The detailed entries document his enlistment, sea voyage, training in Egypt, the landing at Gallipoli, the next seven months of the campaign, the work of the Medical Corps, and a period of convalescence.
After his recovery, Pidcock transferred to the Artillery in order to be with his brother, and served in France. Pidcock died of wounds on 5 April 1918 following action near Albert. For his gallantry in that action he was awarded the Military Cross.
