Description

Khaki cotton drill tunic with plain stand collar and pointed cuffs. Khaki shoulder straps each have a single small British general service button and two holes for insignia that is missing. The left sleeve has embroidered eyelets for removable insignia, also missing. Eyelets in the same formation on the right sleeve have attached rank badges for a staff sergeant or company sergeant major; an embroidered bullion Queen's crown on black above three gold lace chevrons. Both badges are on crimson wool grounds and attached to tunic with small brass hooks.

Panelled tunic has a single dart radiating from the neck edge towards each pleated breast pocket. Pockets have single pointed flaps and fasten with a small general service button. The front is fastened with five of the same brass buttons made by 'W. TWIGG & Co BIRMINGHAM', 'W. DOWLER & SONS BIRMINGHAM' and 'SMITH & WRIGHT LTD BIRMINGHAM'. All buttons are attached to the tunic with ferrous metal split rings. Two holes are located above the left breast pocket, possibly for medal ribbons. The skirts are rounded in front with small side vents and removable brass belt hooks at each side. The tunic is unlined. There is a small patch pocket at the lower right front facing and above this is a British War Department stamp; '51' above 'W [broad arrow symbol] D', 'L' below. Next to this stamp, is another arrow between two dots and on the reverse of the left breast pocket a very faint stamp that has four indistinct letters with the number '5107' below.
