Description

A German pillbox in Owl Trench. This pillbox was one which gave considerable trouble during the fighting at Messines from 7 June 1917 to 11 June 1917. A number of casualties were inflicted by the garrison of machine gunners who had a splendid field of fire. Lieutenant Thomas Alexander (Tom) McIntyre and a small party from the 45th Battalion rushed it on the night of 10 June, but he was killed and most of his party were made casualties. Either that night or the next the Germans vacated the pillbox and the 48th Battlaion, who had relieved the 45th Battalion, occupied it.
