An old French veteran of the 1879 Franco-Prussian war shakes hands with Australian soldier, 1670 Sergeant Robert (Robin) Potter, 6th Battalion from Bairnsdale, Victoria (later appointed Second Lieutenant). Steadying the veteran is 165 Corporal James Barker, 6th Battalion from Northcote, Victoria (later promoted to Lieutenant and awarded a Military Medal). An elderly woman in the doorway and two village children outside the café look on.
