Description

Australian machine gunners returning from the front line trenches to their billets, in France. (Original British Official Photographer caption.) The Australian machine gunners have been identified as members of either the 5th, 6th or 7th Machine Gun Companies, 2nd Australian Division, and are probably walking along a road near Pozieres. Each of the two men at the front of the group is carrying a Vickers Mark I machine gun on his shoulder. The identifications of these two men might possibly be 701 Kenneth Mackenzie of Bundaberg, Qld, and 792 Alfred Bernard Charles Anderson, of Brisbane, Qld, both of the 7th Machine Gun Company. Some men carrying picks are heading in the opposite direction.
