Studio portrait of Temporary Lieutenant Wilbur T Dartnell VC, late of the 25th (Service) Battalion (Frontiersmen). The Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). Lt Dartnell of Collingwood was killed at Maktan on 3 September 1915, was an Australian serving in the British Army in East Africa. For his most conspicuous bravery a posthumous award of the Victoria Cross was made. The award would have been drawn onto this portrait at a later date. See also A01585.
