Description
View of the battlefield in the Ypres Sector, showing some of the many pillboxes which fortified this area against the Australian attack of 20 September. Note the thickness of the roof of the one in the centre, and the triple arched type a little to the right of it, upon which direct hits from anything less than 9 inch high explosive shells did no material damage. There were probably far more pill boxes to the acre in this area than on any other part of the Western front, a condition which was in some measure responsible for the tremendous artillery fire of the Third Battle of Ypres.
