KIEL, GERMANY. THE GERMAN RAIDER "STEIERMARK" ("KORMORAN") WHICH SANK THE HMAS SYDNEY DURING AN ACTION OFF THE WEST AUSTRALIAN COAST 1941-11-19. DURING THE ENGAGEMENT THE SYDNEY SUFFERED HEAVY DAMAGE AND WAS SEEN BURNING FIERCELY ON THE HORIZON BY MEMBERS OF THE CREW OF THE STEIERMARK. NO TRACE OF THE SYDNEY WAS FOUND WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A CARLEY LIFEFLOAT AND TWO EMPTY LIFE BELTS. NO MEMBER OF THE CREW SURVIVED.
