Description

Studio portrait of 2568 Private (Pte) Christopher William Allmond, 9th Light Horse Regiment from Cherryville, South Australia. A 23 year old gardener prior to enlisting on 25 January 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 18th Reinforcements from Adelaide, South Australia aboard HMAT Katuna (A13) on 23 June 1916. After disembarking in Egypt, he transferred to the Imperial Camel Corps and served in the Middle East. He was hospitalized with malaria on 13 May 1918 and spent time in a number of hospitals before being released for duty on 12 July. Five weeks later, he was back in hospital and later died from malaria on 4 September 1918. Pte Allmond is buried in the Port Said War Memorial Cemetery, Port Said, Egypt. His brother, 4370 Pte Leland Corbet Allmond, 27th Battalion was killed in action on 5 November 1916 [see image H05887] and his uncle, 3359 Pte Arthur William Allmond, 50th Battalion was killed in action at Westhoek Ridge, Belgium on 26 September 1917.
