Studio portrait of 4370 Private (Pte) Leland Corbet Allmond, 27th Battalion from Cherryville, South Australia. An 18 year old gardener prior to enlisting on 12 January 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 11th Reinforcements from Adelaide, South Australia aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 25 March 1916. After disembarking in Egypt, he proceeded to France in June and joined the 27th Battalion on the Western Front. Pte Allmond was killed in action near Dernancourt on 5 November 1916 and is buried in the AIF Burial Ground, Grass Lane, Flers, France. His brother, 2568 Pte Christopher William Allmond, Imperial Camel Corps died from malaria on 4 September 1918 [see image H05886] and his uncle, 3359 Pte Arthur William Allmond, 50th Battalion was killed in action at Westhoek Ridge, Belgium on 26 September 1917.
