Studio portrait of 698 Private Thomas George Clark, 12th Battalion from Montieth, South Australia. A 20 year old farm hand prior to enlisting on 3 September 1914, he embarked for overseas with F Company from Hobart, Tasmania aboard HMAT Geelong (A2) on 20 October 1914. While serving at Gallipoli with the 12th Battalion, he was wounded in action and evacuated to Malta for medical treatment. Seven weeks later, he returned to Gallipoli and then after the evacuation to Egypt, he transferred to the 52nd Battalion. Following promotion to Lance Corporal, he went with the battalion to France in June 1916 and the next month was promoted to Corporal (Cpl). Cpl Clark was wounded in action at Mouquet Farm, Pozieres and underwent medical treatment but died from his wounds three days later on 7 September 1916. He is buried in Puchevillers British Cemetery, France.
