Description

Studio portrait of 3239 Gunner (Gnr) Claude Francis James Lawson, 1st Division Trench Mortar Battery from Moglonemby near Euroa, Victoria. A 25 year old farmer prior to enlisting on 18 September 1914, he embarked for overseas with the 1st Reinforcements of the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade from Melbourne on 22 December 1914 aboard HMAT Borda (A30). After serving with the battery at Gallipoli and a short period of hospitalisation, he proceeded to France where he transferred to the 1st Trench Mortar Battery. Pte Lawson was killed in action at Pozieres on 23 July 1916 and buried in Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-La Boisselle, France.
